As mother of three young children, I am constantly reminded that children learn through their play. And of course, we grown ups learn that way too. This blog will detail my play as I learn web 2.0 technologies through Maryland's 23 Things.

The 23 Things and Technology Fair have given me a firm foundation for this Learning 2.0 process. As I've moved through the 23 Things, I have tried to find ways to incorporate them into HCPL. I have made several suggestions to staff and patrons. My favorites are: blogs (I have abandoned my web 1.0 family website for the web 2.0 blog), Delicious (Aberdeen Branch know has its own), mashups, Meebo, and Zoho. I have been surprised by how each of us take hold of different aspects of this learning process. Collabortively, I feel we have a diverse and growing understanding Library 2.0. At first glance, I prefer Netlibrary's layout. I am sure I will use both, depending on title availability. I wonder which I will prefer in function. Only time will tell. I love that HCPL subscribes to these online book services. I have often recommended them to friends and family. We could create and have available (through Passport) podcasts of mandatory training sessions. Also, I saw that Denver Public Library's children librarians created podcasts of storybook readings for their children's site. I would like to take Denver's idea and find either personal applications (record some stories with my kids) or work applications. I have created an account with Odeo Studio to facilitate this process. For searching, I've had the best results with Yahoo's podcast search. I subscribed to a feed for ABC's show LOST.Jackie Cassidyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16833648601086013500noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3507578744427078010.post-67335275287345352252007-09-06T07:49:00.001-07:002007-09-06T07:49:20.771-07:00Monitor Lizard vs. Croc

Jackie Cassidyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16833648601086013500noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3507578744427078010.post-85589794032326217802007-09-06T07:37:00.000-07:002007-09-06T07:46:56.869-07:00Thing #20 YouTubeYouTube is a lot of fun. HCPL may consider creating a wiki as an online advisory group where patrons can add content about what services, programs and information they want to see in the library. Internally, we can use them for booktalking and booklists, share computer problems and resolutions, and how about the staff's ezine page.Jackie Cassidyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16833648601086013500noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3507578744427078010.post-62257683401881239442007-09-05T12:34:00.001-07:002007-09-05T16:50:47.464-07:00Thing #15 Library 2.0How will HCPL fare in its Library 2.0 role? Library 2.0 uses Web 2.0 tools to make it more user-centric. Furthermore, Library 2.0 does not limit access to the web. Can HCPL be the place where you can create mashups? I think it can; the real question is whether the library has reliable enough connectivity to support such functions. We are lucky to have a director that recognizes the importance of Web 2.0. Our director has planted her foot firmly on the side of allowing social networking in the library. Now we need to move toward incorporating 2.0 technology within HCPL's website (will it be named the ebranch). Librarians need to become more versed in Web 2.0 in order to use it to enchance the library's functionality. We need to be in communication and work cooperatively with all levels to establish a path for HCPL's use of Web 2.0. We cannot be left on a dusty shelf. We must embrace this technology and make the library better with it and for the users.Jackie Cassidyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16833648601086013500noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3507578744427078010.post-69283576619521345412007-08-13T12:37:00.000-07:002007-08-13T12:45:23.729-07:00#14 TechnoratiTechnorati is a great sight for seeing whats happening in the wide world of blogs. I really like that they focus on blogs specifically. Such devotion leads to a better product. The social aspect of the site lends itself to playing around, while the search and advanced search are quite practical. I searched for sustainable living blogs. At first I used the tag "green," then by viewing other tags used landed upon "sustainable." I really like the authority count too. Very helpful in determining if I should take the time to look at the site.

mdlearn2Jackie Cassidyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16833648601086013500noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3507578744427078010.post-45841117649327567352007-07-25T16:44:00.000-07:002007-07-26T13:40:39.748-07:00#13 Del.icio.usDel.icio.us, in simple terms is an online "Favorites" site that is kicked up a notch. Finally, I get it. When I first visited Del.icio.us a few months ago, I really didn't buy into the social aspect of using other people's tags. Why do I care what websites others are using. I can now see that the popularity can verify the sites to a degree. What I really want to do is transform the Aberdeen Branch's favorite links on the reference computers into a del.icio.us account. First, the way I plan to use Library Thing to make my life better is to add books that I want to keep in mind for the future. Sure beats the post-it method. (I also enjoy reading the reviews.) This brings me to the second point. I can envision a new Patron Wish List using Library Thing. We can MASH the HCPL catalog and Library Thing to make a new kind of wish list. Any takers? What do you all think? Thirdly, where you edit your profile on Library Thing, there is a great list of Web 2.0 sites that you can acknowledge membership to. <img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhFiOG3VJNLqDy0kDDIIjK9n_TrUEuXs3xfJESWUxrhnZKgrd89nX99waXdIellJ0H8ck8MbO4doouTtWLsn147JLDZLDBD-QxG2klpoTND_wqZXCyAf8gbp11k3KsZpTG-wy6e5fdD2MY/s200/lt.GIF" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5091606365080151394" />
I used this list to become more familiar with happenings on the web. The hardest part of thing 8 was adding the blogroll to my blog. Thanks to Linda for her guidance. About RSS, what a great way to utilize time more efficiently. My thoughts on RSS are similar to those on placing holds on materials at the library. It has loads of benefits, but you loose something. By not browsing the shelf, you loose the opportunity to see all the other books on the shelf. With feeds, by not browsing the rest of the site, you loose the opportunity to see all the other news, pictures, etc. And you don't even know you are missing out.
That said, I do like the feeds. I would love the library to use them for passport updates instead of sending emails. Also, patrons could suscribe to feeds for upcoming events/programs.Jackie Cassidyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16833648601086013500noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3507578744427078010.post-48321681391942064462007-07-09T11:47:00.000-07:002007-07-16T08:48:49.525-07:00#7 More MashupsI am still looking into all these mashups. A LOT of Mashups are FUN to PLAY with. But there are also some very useful mashups, like SubwayMAP (NYC subways and Google Maps). I like Flickrscapes and Montagr for fun Flickr mashups. There is OpenKapow.com and MashupAwards.com for good information and how to make your own. Personal goal...create my own mashup (by next year maybe).Jackie Cassidyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16833648601086013500noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3507578744427078010.post-5921540363616061762007-07-03T07:46:00.000-07:002007-07-18T15:20:03.343-07:00#5 Flickr
I love flickr! It is a great way to share pictures. And 24 dollars is not a lot of money for unlimited storage. Just think of all the money you would have been spending on the photo boxes. By far, the best part of flickr is looking at all the pictures that friends have shared (and the ones from complete strangers too). What still baffles me is how stranges stumble upon your photos and invite you to be part of some group. Is this just by chance or is there a more precise search happening here? Viewing pictures on flickr is not new to me. One of my best friends has been sharing her family pictures for almost 2 years on flickr. I like it much better than Kodak Easy Share, which another friend uses. But now, after being prompted, I think I will create a flickr account of my own this summer.

Jackie Cassidyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16833648601086013500noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3507578744427078010.post-15640427978640070062007-06-19T11:33:00.000-07:002007-06-19T12:00:42.704-07:00Week 1, Thing 2The 7 1/2 Habits tutorial laid out a clear plan to help us navigate the 23 Things.
1. PLAY.

The easiest part for me is likely to be number 4. I have great confidence in myself as a person and know that I will be able to work through the 23 Things effectively. The hardest part is going to using the technology. Not because the technology is difficult or confusing, but because I am busy. Remember my husband and three young kids. When is there time to play on the web?

This brings me to my Learning Contract.
Goal:
To complete the 23 Things by the end of August and when appropriate introduce new technology to customers and friends each week.
Obstacles:
Time- make a schedule
Toolbox:
Digital camera, headphones, planner, high speed internet access, computer, etc.
Path to Goal:

Check in:

Jackie CassidyJackie Cassidyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16833648601086013500noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3507578744427078010.post-40636860129572957462007-06-09T10:07:00.000-07:002007-06-09T10:26:59.745-07:00Week 1, Thing 1As I begin Maryland's 23 Things, I find myself looking forward to applying these web 2.0 technologies in work and play. Can Passport use RSS instead of emails to alert us of changes. I think librarians should share book reviews through the creation of a wiki. How is the library's myspace page coming along. Myspace would be a great way to learn about our patrons' profiles. I already told the other preschool moms to post our graduates' pictures on flickr for everyone to share. And I have myspace and youtube plans for my husband's videography business. This all seems like it will be a lot of fun to PLAY around with.Jackie Cassidyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16833648601086013500noreply@blogger.com0
